National Woman’s History Month celebrates the many contributions women make to our society. This annual event started in 1911 as International Women’s Day. In 1978, the School District of Sonoma, CA, chose the week including March 8th to celebrate “Women’s History Week.” The event grew in popularity and in 1981 the Congress passed a resolution making Women's History Week a national holiday to legally expand the focus to a whole month in 1987.

The 2007 theme, “Generations of Women Moving History Forward” presents special opportunities to highlight some critically important historic events, including the 50th anniversary of the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, and the 30th anniversary of the National Women’s Conference in Houston, Texas.
