Top Seven Ways to Get the Most Out of a Training Course

  1. Prepare: Make sure the classes you register for meet your needs by reading the Course Description, Learning Objectives and Target Audience. Complete any prerequisite or pre-work prior to the course.
  2. Arrive on Time: Allow yourself time to get settled; find the restroom, etc. before the scheduled class start time. This will help you be ready to engage with the instructor and fellow participants (see #4) and will limit disruptions to others in the class.
  3. Turn off the Cell Phone/Blackberry: You will have a much more meaningful learning experience if you are fully present in the class rather than physically in class but mentally at the office. If turning the device off completely is not possible, at the very least, put it on silent mode. And please take all calls/emails outside of the class. Talking and/or typing in class are disruptive to your fellow students and to your instructors.
  4. Engage: At its best, adult learning is an interactive process. You will learn more by fully participating in activities and discussions. So, jump in there!
  5. Give Feedback: HHSU staff really does read all of the evaluations we get back at the close of a training class. Future classes are shaped by the feedback you give us. Help us make your training experiences better and better by telling us what you think. Feedback that is specific is most helpful.
  6. Apply: When you get back to your office, spend some time reflecting on specific ways you might apply what you have learned. If you don't use it, you might lose it!
  7. Contact Us: We're here to help. If you can't find the class you're looking for or if you have any questions about a particular course, send us an email or give us a call. We want to hear from you!
