Program Objectives:
Dr. Mayer’s presentation entitled, “Traditional Medicines of the Lewis and Clark Expedition” focuses on medicine as it was practiced during this time, as well as how medicine influenced and united the success and collaboration between two cultures.
Biographical Sketch:
Dr. Mayer is a family practitioner at the Trinity Practice Center in Minot, North Dakota, and works at the Quentin Burdick Emergency Room in Belcourt, North Dakota on weekends. Dr. Mayer was born and raised on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in New Town, North Dakota, where she is an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes: Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara. Her Indian name is “Good Medicine.” Dr. Mayer graduated from Northern Arizona University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in education and taught biology at Coconino High School in Flagstaff, Arizona. She attended the University of North Dakota (UND) in Grand Forks to complete pre-medicine studies and graduated in 1995. While at UND she served in the United States Army Reserves from 1984 to 1990 as an army medic and medical supply specialist.
There will also be an ethnic food sampling following the program.
